Stop Animal Cruelty

Ways to Stop Animal Cruelty

Countless animal cruelty cases go unreported every year. Without you, animals have no voice and cases of abuse remain silenced. Its time to speak out against the abuse of animals; there are ways that you can stop animal cruelty. Here are just a few suggestions:

Be aware of animal cruelty

Pay attention to the animals in your community. If you noice signs of animal abuse make phone calls to animal protection and rescue agencies. For example, if a dog a few doors away appears to be significantly underweight, a case of animal neglect could be at hand. If it weren’t for active people like you, reports of animal abuse would not be made. By being aware you can stop animal cruelty.

Know the signs of animal abuse

There are a number of animal abuse indicators that will help you target a case of animal cruelty. For example: bodily wounds or injuries, missing hair, emaciation, or limping are a few signs that an animal has either been neglected or abused. You can fight animal cruelty by being knowledgeable of the signs and indicators.

Stop animal cruelty by knowing who to call

Every state has different animal abuse call centers so its important to know exactly who to call to report animal cruelty.

Be detailed when reporting an animal abuse crime

It’s crucial that you include as much information about the animal abuse case to humane officers or your local animal protection and rescue agent. Include details such as the type of abuse, the identity of the individuals involved, the location you witnessed the abuse, and the exact date. The more details you furnish, the more likely you will bring another animal cruelty case to an end.

Be persistent and determined about stopping animal cruelty

Contact law enforcement in your local area and voice your concern about animal abuse. Demand that animal cruelty be top priority! Remind officials that animal abuse is against the law and should be treated strictly just as any other crime.

Fight for stricter anti-animal cruelty laws

In many cases, animal abusers are let off too easily by courts and penalized as though they merely broke a violation. Fight for stronger laws and penalizations . Its time we put animal abusers on the leash and put and end to the abuse and cruelty of animals.

Be an example to your children!

Children can be equally guilty of abusing animals simply because they don’t know any better. Teach your children to love  and care for animals. Explain to your kids that animals are helpless unless we help them.  Lastly, encourage your children to be an example to other children with household animals.

We should all be more aware of animal welfare and take action to put an end to the abuse of animals. These are just a few ways to stop animal cruelty, however please share with us your thoughts and add to this list…

  1. [...] Countless animal cruelty cases go unreported every year. The Humane Society reports that over 1 million animals are either neglected or abused every year. Without your voice, animal abuse cases are unspoken for; its time to speak out against abuse cases and do whatever it takes to stop animal cruelty! [...]

  2. Share your thoughts about animal cruelty:

    * Have you ever observed a possible case of animal abuse? If so, did you do anything about it?

Yes unfortunately and many times I have reported a person but in areas I have lived often the only real result was the animal was taken then put to sleep. I have since learned more about private animal rescue networks. Locally we had a pit bull fighting farm and many people were smart enough to record the night time sounds of the dogs growling snarling and other sad sounds of a pup in trouble. This went on and always in the same direction across the woods. Finally the place was found and the abusers arrested. In cases such as that I do report them to authorities because sadly fighting dogs often cannot be rehabilitated and euthanasia is the most humane end to their sad journey on earth.

    * Do you feel that animal cruelty issues should be given more attention? Are people doing enough to stop animal abuse?

I don’t think more laws will help. Most pay a fine and some go to jail but in the end they often become repeat offenders. Cruelty is in their heart and fines and jail does little to fix that. These people need intensive therapy programs, but then again so do child abusers and we know they are not getting the right help either. I think prevention of animal cruelty should begin at home and people need to stop thinking of animals as disposable unfeeling things.

    * How do you feel animal abusers should be penalized?

While fines and jail might work for some, I think more programs designed to bring humans and animals together might help for others. Prison programs that have inmates training service dogs seem very beneficial. Violent men are learning something special and learning skills that can later help them to become employed. I believe more strongly in therapy approaches for most…some simply cannot be rehabilitated and for them only some good long jail sentences will keep them from abusing animals or humans.

    * Do you teach your children to care for animals?

Absolutely!!! My kids both grew up to be animal rescuers and caretakers of special needs animals. Never has any member of our family harmed a living being without there being a severe threat to life/limb. My youngest is great with aggressive animals while my oldest is great with brain damaged ones. Amy works great with dogs and my area is with emotionally traumatized, or sensory impaired cats.

  3. I can’t stand anyone who would hurt a defenseless animal. If you can take pictures if you see this so you have proof. Anyone who hurts an animal will surly hurt a person. I have heard that serial killers stared with hurting animals so I believe it may be the first step . Meaning if a child is harming an animal you should get them help ASAP something is wrong and if you don’t stop it now it will turn into something much much bigger later. Not to metion think of what they are doing to the poor animal they are abusing and it has no idea why its being hit and can’t defend it self. We are big animal lovers in my family. You can see in my pictures the cat we picked up not long ago. Someone dumped it off by the river, we were fishing (cheap dinner) and when we were leaving I saw the cat. We picked it up and brought him home. The poor thing was starving! He is the friendliest cat you ever want to see. We named him new cat. LOL we have a Marley dog, a Mat the cat, so we named him new cat. I love his name, we are so weird don’t even ask.

  4. I am sitting here looking at my dog and my kitties and it brings tears to my eyes. How could anyone hurt such precious and beautiful creatures? They are our family I love them so much. Marley dog is my princess and the kittys are so lovable they are both lap cats. I hate man people who hurt animals or other people. I think if you hurt an animal you should be punished just as if you hurt another human.

  5. If people don’t want the animals, is all they have do do is call animal control. They will come pick the animal up. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out. The pet didn’t asked to be adopted. It was the person who wanted the pet.
I think people who hurt animals are control freaks. They hurt little pets. They know animals can’t hit back. That’s the point.
I feel animals laws are okay. I have about people all the time on getting ten years or more. That’s a good thing. I know in Polk County that they are really cracking down are pitbull fights. I been reading it in the newspaper a lot. I guess that’s a kinda animal abuse.

  6. Our family has hosted a variety of pets over the years, and each one was truly a part of our family, one of our children, a friend and confidonte. When we lose a fur baby, it’s a loss to our entire family.

Our Weims, who were gifts from my husband’s sister, are our life, right along with our kids. They go with us whenever possible. They eat with us, and yep they even sleep with us believe it or not. Our male, Ashwood Thomas who is 5 and a half, is Tom’s very best friend. He is beside him the entire day, when Tom is having a rough day, Ash is right there. Our vet says that Ash knows about Tom’s cancer and other illnesses and that is why he shows the love he has for him.
Our female is Maggie May, and she is such a big lover, she tends to follow our daughter, and loves to be adored. We have a soccer field accross from us that allow for easy excercise for them, which is a great relief to us.

I know this blog is about animal cruelity, but I’m hoping my post shows each who reads it, just how much my family is against it. We have attended protests, and we have fund fundraisers for our local Humane Society. A family is not complete until they feel the love of a ruff or meow. (JMHO)

  7. April,
Your right on telling people to, “Speak Out.” Animals can’t do it.
    Sherri,
That’s really neat that you help.
I can say this. If I see an animal lost, I try to get their attention to come to me. Then, I take them to my girlfriend, who has a grooming business. She cleans the furry animals up, and calls animal control. I guess that’s kinda helping.

  8. I know in Polk County that they are really cracking down are pitbull fights. I been reading it in the newspaper a lot. I guess that’s a kinda animal abuse.

Pitbull fighting is a horrible, horrible abuse! This is a case I helped out with publishing and donations, if you check the link and photos be warned it’s horrible. This poor pup was so badly chewed up she had to have a leg amputated. Her lips were gone and prosthetic lips had to be built for her. There are lots of videos available of this dog who is now pretty famous. She’s been adopted and is in a loving home, but so many more never get that lucky. Many bait dogs used to train pits to fight are brutally mauled and left to die. Pits fight eachother to the death. It’s only a bloodsport with no benefit to any living being, same as cock fighting. No benefits other than a bunch of sick people standing around watching animals brutally kill each other.

  9. My posts say michelle instead of my screen name. Sorry.

I have to say I was sick to my stomach when all of that came out about the dog fights with the football player. I can’t imagine how anyone could do such a thing do a defenseless animal. And the horrible treatment and torture they did to make the dogs mean. What kind of sicko gets pleasure from seeing animals in pain like that? I will never in my life understand how anyone could do such an inhumane thing.

  10. I am animal lover so I can’t see why anyone will want mistreat or abuse any animals!!!!! It hurt me to see one run over by a car. Yes , I feel it our duty to report anyone that is abusing the animals. They can’t talk to tell anyone. So that where we come in. I don’t like people to make dogs fight like they do the pit bull dogs. Why would anyone want to see a lots of bloods all over the place and mammed up dogs? Something is wrong with them. I looked at the link above me , yes these people are very sick to do that. So we all need to step in and protect the animals!!!!!

  11. I once freed several dogs from kennels and chains, who had no food or water. I found them good homes with nice families who would treat them humanely.

Make sure that if you are going to be doing something like this, TAKE PICTURES BEFORE YOU TAKE ACTION!!!! I ended up in court because the owners said that I stole their animals….the only thing that saved me was several testimonies (but pictures are a sure fire way to convict people).

  12. This subject still has me angry I keep thinking of those poor helpless animals that just get thrown away. How can anyone do that to a life? I think of the animals that are put to sleep because people aren’t responsible for the pets they own and don’t have them fixed. If they would just have their pets spayed or neutered it would stop the over population at the pounds and less animals would be put to sleep every day. This really tears my heart out to think of someone just not caring and dumping off animals because they can. Well you can’t, its wrong and its illegal. I hope they all get caught and go to jail. I keep looking at this beautiful cat we found, he was starving and left to die. I don’t understand it he is so lovable. He is a total lap cat why would anyone just throw him away like he was trash.

  13. How did I misss this blog? Is it new? Or do I need glasses??

This is a subject SO close to my heart!!! For years I have rescued abused, abandoned and starved horses. I cant do any more… but I still try to help.

I have seen the WORST cases that would just make you CRY and full af anger. People will buy horses for their kids just because they “want one.” Forgetting it takes a LOT to care for a horse. I have has so many little girls calling me asking can you comel ook at my horse and tell me whats wrong with her…
I get there and they are dehydrated and ya have to telll the parents the animal HAS to have water… there is no if ands or buts about it.

Or they have gotten out and ate all thef eed which could KILL them b/c they colic..and tyhat can kill a horse in no time
… Those arent real abuse situations those are the “just dont know ones”

The real ones are when I have found a horse TIED to a tree in the hot GA sun for WEEKS.
Or kept in a barn and left there and we found him on the floor and he was so weak he couldnt get up…starved to death… but still alive and we had to hand feed him water and food… and he still didnt make it :( b/c he had been down to long. I have taken rope and rigged up a way to lift a horse up that was down from being starved…to the back of my jeep… and it was still no hope…no matter how hard we tried… BUT someone done this to this horse… that is true animal abuse… and I could go on and on… the saddest is a mini we rescued and two days later went back to try to get the others and they were all dead.

So many people DO abuse animals…
They are Gods creatures…. just like we are.. they are living breathing creatures that have feelings too.. and there is no excuse for animal abuse.. NONE.
I tried so hard to not ever let it get to me after a while of witnessing it… but you just cant help it….. you cry every single time….espesially when you try so hard to save one and its just to late…

Maybe I should post the pictures I have taken over the years? They are pretty sad…

I even tok pics after one abused horse that had died and all the other horses lined up in single file and passsed one by one by him as if they were saying goodbye…I have never witnessed anything like it my life! Thats when I knew for a fact they have feelings….and knew exactly what was going on and had happened to their buddy
Hmm maybe I shouldnt have found this blog huh?

  14. I actually remember when we were still living at our previous house, my sister and I witnessed some neighbor kids playing with a couple of kittens outside. We were just kids ourselves as well. But the way these kids were playing with the kittens, dragging them across the street with rope or yarn, that bothered us. We both did go out and warn the kids that we would call animal control if they continued to treat the kittens they way they did. We had pet cats of our own, and just the idea of tying yarn around their necks and dragging them around, ugh. They did quit with the yarn, and we hadn’t noticed any other disturbing actions. But I still remember that. Funny how I forget a lot of things, but this I haven’t. They may have just been kids at the time (elementary school age), but that’s still no way to “play” with kittens. Even we knew better than that.

Also, I adopted my dog last summer. He used to cower from my step dad at times, as if my step dad was going to hit him (my step dad would never dare hurt an animal). Just see my dog’s reactions made us wonder if he had been abused somehow before he ended up at the Humane Society. I did notice he had a couple of scabs on him, one on his front leg and one on the top of his head right next to an ear. I have no idea where he got those minor injuries or how long he had them for. They’re just scars now, but I still wonder if his previous owners ever did anything.

  15. Meghan – it’s great you and your sister had the smarts to stand up for those animals! Many children deem animals as “toys” unless educated otherwise by their parents. Its important we teach our children that animals need to be treated with extra care.

  16. OK I think the state thinks I am the new adoption agency. LOL Today two dogs showed up at the door and of course we fed them. The kids are making signs to hang around the neighborhood. I must have animal lover on my front door because they all come here. LOL they are so cute one is a cocker spaniel black and white and the other I think is a ridge back. It has all the markings. I am such a sucker, her I am feeding strays and bringing them into the house. I just can’t help it. First that new cat now two dogs Oh my gosh what next? I am becoming an haven for stray animals they know I can’t turn them away or let them go hungry. They are sooo cute too. I have to take a pic.

  17. Well I went out to the yard to take their pics and they are gone. I will be worried to death now.

  18. its ok I think they found their owner. I’m not sure but they are up the street and the person seems to know them. I will wait and see and update you on how it goes with the little cuties.

  19. Yep that was the owner. I went and talked to him and told him he needed to have tags on the dogs and he should really be more careful. They could have been picked up or worse. He actually seem scared that he lost his pets but he should have tags on his pets that is so dangerous.

  20. Uh oh… they changed sstuff around…LOL and just when I had found my way around!! Looks good though!!

  21. Watching tv today I saw a commerical and it reminded me of this blog. The commerical was about the animals in the ASPCA it was so sad. They were trying to raise money to help abused animals, if you would have seen the faces on those precious babies. How do people do that to a living creature? Do they stop to think? Do they just not care? I just don’t understand it, you look into those big beautiful sad eyes and it rips your heart out. I will never understand how this happens why anyone would do this to animals.

  22. Hello my name is Porscha and I agree with this 100% More people need to be aware of this and stand up for the voiceless. The laws need to be more strict. I created a petition and I would hope that you would sign it and help me reach my goal of 1500 signatures. The link is below.
