How I Found Microgiving

Several people have asked how I found Microgiving. The short story is that I found it while searching for donors and philanthropists on Yahoo. In reality I should be asking for money instead of donating it. Here is my full story.

Like most people I grew up in a single parent home living paycheck to paycheck. I was unsure what to do about college so, I took some classes after high school but never completed a degree. I finally got a decent paying job and bought a car. Eventually I was able to buy a cheap house too. Then that car kept breaking down. I would fix it and then something else would break down. Each time I thought that if I just fixed that one thing the car would be in good shape but, after several times of fixing it I finally had enough and abandoned the car at the place where I usually had it fixed. That car cost me several thousand dollars in repair bills.

Because of losing the car I had to quit my job and look for a new one. I was fortunate enough to find something within three weeks but I couldn't actually start for another month. Being out of work for two months total got me farther behind. Plus, I made four dollars an hour less at this new job.

Eventually I got caught up and bought a brand new car as I had vowed never to get a used car again. Then I decided I should get back to school. So I took all of my prerequisites for nursing. I did two semesters of nursing school but fell behind in my bills again. I dropped out of nursing school and started working 120+ hours every two weeks. Throughout that time I was thinking of ways to make money. I tried a few things online but they didn't work out.

Several years prior I had taught myself to make simple websites. I started thinking about what I could make that may make some money while I'm doing overtime. Then I came up with an online shopping mall. I had seen several coworkers shopping online so, I thought that would be a good idea. I just used HTML to make the site and then I placed banners from several popular stores that many people already shop. One day I'll teach myself CSS and make the site more attractive.

After I got the site completed I needed to get shoppers. I was thinking if I could just find some people that already shop online or are accustomed to helping others that they may be willing to help me. Also, I was thinking why would people want to shop on my website. I decided that I have always wanted to help others and this would easily provide a way for it. I had learned a philosophy over the last year that says something like “If you help others achieve their goals you will achieve your own.”

I would like to help animal shelters, people living with cystic fibrosis or cancer, and the homeless. It wouldn't take long to get myself out of the situation that I'm in. Then I could start really assisting others. I'd like to start by pledging 10% of my earnings from my website to charities. Over time maybe I can increase the percentage.

So if you would like to help me help other please shop the links on my website. Please send me a message and I'll tell you more about the website.

I wish you luck!

I wish you luck! I used to do the banner ad thing to try to raise money for my own personal animal sanctuary. I used Commission Junction, Share a Sale, and a few others, set up attractive websites but found I was up against the same problem you are right now. Eventually after a year I just got frustrated with paying for a domain and hosting and not being able to help the animals in my own kennel let alone help others. I went and tried drop shipping and ebay sales and failed miserably at that too. I'm just NOT salesperson! I really hope you have what it takes to drive people to your site. I know others make money doing it, I'm simply not one of them. I work with Wordpress, Xoops, Nuke, Drupal, and other content managers. I tried Joomla but didn't really like it. I started doing websites around 1998...back then you could actually make money doing it. Now with MySpace and cookie cutter websites like freewebs there isn't any one willing to pay for a webmaster anymore...can't even get a paid moderator position. I do volunteer for a local non-profit as their Internet Coordinator and Information Architect and in return I have everything I need to be online and able to do the job plus I get to hang around a great bunch of folks and take part in lots of local charity events. I wish you success in all you do and when your site really takes off...hey remember me, you might need some help :) I work cheap...really.
