why I am not homeschooling. I made this a thread but wanted to add it to my journal also. I think people have the right to know why this decision was made.
This question was brought to my attention and I want to address it to the entire community. I want you all to understand why homeschooling is not an option for me.
There are so many reasons why I made the decision to put my son in this school even though I know it is a great sacrifice on my family.
yes homeschooling is cheaper, but I have a special needs child who needs daily interaction with other childern to learn the social skills he needs to eventually be able to live and work in the real world. I can't shelter him from everything but I can make decisions that are in my belief best for him.
I am not qualified to teach a special needs child or any child at home. I am aware that they have the computer classrooms but it still takes a lot from the parent to understand and help them. I don't feel he would get a proper education at home with me. I have PTSD so I have my own set of problems and I have days where I just can not function. That would make it impossible to teach him at home. I also have IC which is a bladder disease and other medical problems which I have to be seen by a doctor quite often. That makes home schooling impossible for me. I can't very well leave him alone while I go to the doctor on top of that. I go 3 times a week sometimes more.
The Asperger's, ADD, Bipolar and other problems make it impossible to get him to concentrate with someone he knows as well as he knows me so he really needs to be in a school setting where he is more apt to listen to the person in charge.
Having OI I want him to be with kids his own age as much as possible. Its very hard for a child with brittle bone disease to make friends and he has done that at this school. He can't do sports, ride a bike, skate board, run and lots of other things. This school is very much curicumlum based and it makes it easier for him to fit in. They are also capable of teaching him in the way that he needs to be taught. Turning on a computer won't do it for him. He doesn't understand what is going on most of the time and at this school the teacher takes the time to explain it till he does understand it. I could not do that since I am not trained to teach much less trained to teach in way these teachers are. They are amazing with him.
Damian is so happy here, he has gone from an F and D average to a B average why would I take that from him? I would just as soon give up my right arm than take away his ability to learn and grow in an enviroment that is able to support him in the way this one is.
Speaking with the psychologist before making the decision it was his opinion that a school setting is the best option for Damian. That was a major factor in my decision. According to the psych. it is important for him to be in a setting such as this. One of the reasons Microgiving has supported this request is due to the fact that I turned in this paper work and they were able to see that the doctor did believe this is the best setting for him.
If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask. I really don't mind answering them and I think that if it were me giving my money to help someone and didn't understand I would want to ask questions. Even if your a recepient and have questions please ask. I understand this is an unusual situation and want you all to know that I am happy to answer any questions you might have.
Thanks for listening. Michie
PS this is not a promotion and I am not whining I am trying to answer questions that I have learned are being asked. No one has aked me and I wanted to be upfront and let everyone know why this school and not homeschooling. Thanks you again.
