Biography
I am a 44 year old mom of 3 who is now living in a tent with my 10 year old son, Dallas. Our home was completely destroyed and is unsafe to enter. My only wish right now is to have a home of our own by my sons 11th birthday on Aug 6th. My job was also affected as it was flooded too so I have been unable to work since June 11. We lost everything in this flood and this has been the hardest month of my life. All of our posessions were destroyed and we had to leave it there for the garbage men to collect. But we werent alone in this. All of our neighbors were affected the same way. Up until last month, Cedar Rapids was a good, safe place to raise your kids, build a life and be happay. (sounds corny but its true!) Today alot of us are living with friends, family or just surviving day by day hoping for the best. People are still living in the shelters which are packed and hoping to get into their homes or to find new ones. Any help is apprieciated and I for one will be grateful. I have lived next to the Mississippi River up until 5 years ago when I moved here and always thought of the Cedar River as a creek. Not anymore do I. The Mississippi never took away all of my possissions. In less than 24 hours on June 11 and 12 my life and the lives of so many have been changed forever. Any help is and will always be apprieciated. I for one will forever be grateful.
My Purpose
I was born in Davenport IA and lived there or in one of the cites known as the Quad Cities for most of my life. When I was 39 years old, my son and I came here to Cedar Rapids to start over. My previous 10 years before that were tough and I wanted to raise my then 6 year old in a good community. For the last 5 years, we have built up a life here. I finally found a job that I really enjoyed and just started on June 2, 2008. Then came the news on June 11 that the Cedar was rising and parts of Cedar Rapids would be evacuated. We were in the 500 year plan so we thought we might get a little water but nothing bad. On the evening of the 11th, the police were letting all of us know that we needed to be out by 6:00 pm on June 12. So we packed a couple of days worth of clothes and right before I walked out the door, I grabbed my family pictures. Thank God I did. When we came by on Interstate 380 on June 12, that was as close as we could get, the water was 2 feet in our house. By 6:00 pm, it was covered. Since then we have stayed at friends homes, hotels and because of financial reasons, are now staying in a tent. But my son and I can still laugh at life and are grateful for everything that comes our way. Dallas is proud that he started his first bonfire (with my supervision and help) and I have learned that peace and serenity does exist in the small places. I have learned the beauty once again of a sunset in Iowa and in Illinois. The only worry I have is my son and his happiness. Thank you so much for all you can do and my God bless you and you will be in both of our prayers.
