List achievements and any future educational plans : I was raised in a small coal mining town in West Virginia (sounds like a country song about to happen doesn't it?), quit school in the 8th grade, married at 15, had 4 babies before my 20th birthday. I was married 21 years to an abusive man. So I know a little about domestic violence. One of my earliest memories is of someone asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I was about 4 years old. I responded by saying "I want to be a nurse and have 4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls. Well, I did manage to accomplish these goals, though not exactly in that order. Having 4 babies and a very demanding and abusive spouse, made getting an education not an easy task. I started by getting my GED when I was 18 years old. I had just given birth to my third child when I took the exam. I then started taking one class per semester from the community college. They would hold night classes at the high school about 6 miles from my house. When 3 of my children were in school and my youngest was 3, I applied for and was accepted into nursing school. It was very hard to get through school and attend to my children and their father. But I succeeded. I have had a very good career as a registered nurse, working in a trauma intensive care unit at a major teaching hospital and level one trauma center, then as a nursing unit supervisor in a cardiovascular intensive care unit at a top 100 heart hospital, then as the house supervisor in the same hospital. I am currently working as a volunteer Faith Community Nurse to educate the public about domestic violence, and to teach women that they too can move from being victims to being victorious! I have been married 12 years to a wonderful, kind and gentle man who encourages me to be me and has shown me what love really looks like.
