Biography
My name is Amy Carter. I am the wife of a US Marine, James Carter. We are currently stationed aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. We have two children, Dusty (son) is 16yrs old and is a special needs child. Kayla (daughter) is 15yrs old and has anemia . Dusty was born with multiple medical issues. Seizures, microcephaly, an immune system disorder (inability to produce one of the two immune system antibodies). In 60 yrs of research at Duke they had never seen anyone that was not able to produce that certain antibody. So they did not know what to tell me. He gets sick pretty easy. He has had meningitis once and strep throat probably 40 times in his lifetime. When we get the cold it is like the flu to him. Over the summer he somehow got salmonella. When he did he started having seizures on Thurs/Fri and did not stop till Tuesday. One of the seizures hit the part of the brain that regulates body temps. His went down too low and the ICU team acted quickly. While there they did a lot of tests on him. On a MRI they found that the back of his brain was compressed against his brain stem. They need to fix that by way of brain surgery at Duke University in Durham NC. Duke is over 3 hours away. They also think he may have MS.
I also have multiple medical issues. I have had 17 surgeries since 1992. I broke my spine in 2005. That was due to a severe case of degenerative disc disease that I was diagnosed with. In 1999, at the age of 26, I had the spine of an 80yr old woman. When I broke it they had to perform surgery in order to fix it. Otherwise I would have paralyzed myself very easily. I even surprised them by not having more issues when I broke it. I have had 7 mini-strokes; heart stopped 5 times, cancer 3 times, developing diabetes 2 yrs ago and more. On Sept 1 2009, our wedding anniversary, I was told by my doctor that I may have cancer again. She was convinced I do have it. She is currently running tests on me for more information. Myself and my son already go to numerous doctors appts each month and now to add the new issues we will be going even more. We also recently found out that our daughters anemia has gotten worse.
Our problem is that we currently have one running vehicle that is a SUV. My husband has a 91 Honda CBR 600 F3 motorcycle and a 93 Nissan 240. But they are not running. The car needs a motor in it. He has been trying to work on the motorcycle but because of financial issues he has not been able to finish it.
That is a problem because we have a lot of medical appts to go to, surgeries, tests and so on because of our medical issues. With him having to use our only vehicle to go to work it has costed us over $400 a month in gas and we have not been able to afford for us to get to our appointments.
My husband and I both have been a victim of identity theft. As a result, our auto insurance sky rocketed. It went from about $75 a month to over $400 a month. We have been trying to fix that issue but ran into a road block. We have even got the citations in question fingerprinted. They found no fingerprints at all. That did not help. Now the courts in Florida say my husband must first pay a fee for a case to be opened in court. Then try to prove to a judge that the tickets are not his. So you see any extra expense is just not in our budget. We need help getting the car fixed for several reasons. We cannot afford to get either one of them fixed them right now.
We really need some type of help with this. I really hope that someone is able to and willing to help us.

Update:
Between two EFMP offices, my husband's command, and his family readiness officer (as well as myself and my husband) they are trying to see if husband can be transferred to the base that is closer to home. But in the meantime we need help so we can at least put food on the table and to make sure we can get where we need to go but the gas expenses are killing us.
As well as get the car or motorcycle fixed as soon as possible so that we can get to all of our medical appointments. I still have been unable to return for more testing on the possible cancer diagnosis.

Update*** As of October 18th the doctors found two tumor/cysts inside my son's head. One is between his ear and his brain and has enzymes in it that can eat away at bone. The other is sitting on his brain stem. They have to do surgery to treat the one behind the ear. He has been put on homebound schooling because he has had an increase in seizures and has had issues with vertigo. We go to see the surgeon on Nov 23rd to set up the first surgery.
Update(Dec 2 2010)
Dusty's first surgery will be on December 13 th 2010.
My husband is set to deploy Jan/Feb 2011.

God will follow you everywhere you go

Posted on Fri 8 Jan, 01:41 am

Thank God he follows us everywhere we go. My son was recently hospitalized for multiple seizures. I am due for a surgical procedure on Janurary 28th 2010. I know he will be in the hands of the doctors and nurses. I thank God that my husbands fellow brothters and sisters returned home safely from Iraq and now pray for the thousands going to Afganistan to protect us. I it a shame was military families at home have to endure while their loved ones are deployed. People do not realize the sacrifice our military familes  make each and everyday to protect our nation. I wish there were more supporters ..I mean even if someone does not agree with the war they could at the least support our military servicemen and women overseas fighting and putting their lives on the line for our freedom, proctection and lives. I think they should be rewarded with more than they are to do what they do. Granted they volunteered to do what they do. They all deserve more. Yes, I may be bias because I am a m  >>>

I found two places in NC that provide free or low cost cars. I do not
live in NC so I have no experience with them but it's worth a shot.
