Biography

I'm a 23 year old deaf person seeking to get a cochlear implant. I have already been declared a candidate after having a hearing evaluation done. I have no health insurance, and am having a hard time finding funding, so I haven't been able to progress with the cochlear implant process.

Not winter, that's for sure! What is your favorite meal? Oh boy, I don't know. This changes frequently. What time do you wake up in the morning? It's usually really late morning when I get up. If you could have one super power, what would it be? Flying. What, it'd be awesome to be able to fly like a bird! What is your greatest ambition? I'm still figuring this out. Who is the person from you past you wish you could go back and talk to? my maternal grandfather. What characteristics do you think you've inherited from your parents? I've definitely gotten my dad's technology geekiness. What do you never leave home without? my hearing aid and my sidekick 3. Who would you most like to meet? Oh gosh, I don't know. Hm. If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it? Get myself the cochlear implant I've been wanting! What is the most embarrassing thing youve ever done? None comes to mind right now. Hobbies and Talents : I'm a computer geek, and spend hours online socializing with random friends, playing games and just entertaining myself. I also enjoy listening to music, and hanging out with my hyperactive mutt. List achievements and any future educational plans : I managed to graduate from high school, and aced Elementary Algebra in college. I've written a couple of articles for our local newspaper, which was an awfully big deal for me. Right now, I have no future educational plans, as being in a traditional school/college setting just isn't for me. I grew up learning using the hands on method basically, thanks to the deaf school, so the traditional system throws me for a loop.

Hearing Aids for Africa

Got hearing aids hiding in storage somewhere? Or just laying around unused? Old hearing aids that's been put away since you got new ones to replace them? Hey, send in any hearing aids and/or spare hearing aid batteries that aren't being used, and they'll be donated to deaf kids in Burkina, Africa! This hearing aids collection project is for the African Hope Initiative. A friend is working with an audiologist in Cheyenne to get the hearing aids cleaned up and working; and she will be flying out to Burkina in November with the hearing aids.

Description: Meghan needs help hearing! Meghan is completely deaf in her left ear, and can barely hear out of her right ear. Her hearing loss is a result of bacterial meningitis when she was 2 years old. Meghan wishes for a cochlear implant to help her hear better and improve the quality of her life! Hearing evaluations have declared her a candidate for the procedure but the costs associated are far too much for Meghan to afford. The estimated total cost is $100,000, but since she's applying for the CNI Cochlear Implant Assistance Program. if she is able to receive their help her costs will be cut significantly and she would only need help covering her hospital/surgical/etc. expenses. Message from Meghan: "The cochlear implant could allow me to hear more, hear better, and hopefully understand what is going on around me better."

My progress: Hearing evaluation to declare me as a candidate for the procedure is done. But since this was done in Sept. of 2007, another hearing test is needed to see where my hearing loss is (this appointment has been set for May 5, along with a visit with the surgeon to go over CT scans, etc.).

This is a one time only expense assistance request for 1 adults

My message:It is my wish to receive a cochlear implant to help me hear better. My left ear is completely deaf and hearing aids have been of no benefit in the left ear at all. My right ear has a severe to profound loss (my deafness is a result of bacterial meningitis from when I was 2 years of age). I do hear somewhat with a hearing aid in the right ear, but the cochlear implant could allow me to hear more, hear better, and hopefully understand what is going on around me better.

Supporting Documentation: Meghan has the following documentation

Do you qualify for any additional help?: Not at this time. Am hoping the CNI Cochlear Implant Assistance Program will accept my application and donate the implant, but I need to get all of the testing and CT scans done first, along with the doctor's permission before sending in the application. I have contacted the local insurance office, and their insurance pool plan (which I would need to have been on for a year before they will consider coverage of the implant) costs $350+ per month, with with my other expenses I just cannot afford this expensive insurance plan.

What local/other agencies have you contacted?: Lion's Club, insurance companies, all negative on help. I have contacted them either via emails or internet relay calls. I do not qualify for SSI so I can't get on Medicare through them. It has been really difficult trying to find any organizations that would be of assistance.

Did you get denial letters? (if so are they attached to your request?): No. Well I have a letter that states I am uneligible for Medicare that I could send.

What other sources of income do you or your family receive?: I'm employed part-time by the local newspaper (29 hours per week), and do not qualify for benefits through my job due to the amount of hours I'm working.

Supporting documentation depends upon your request, but the general
theme is proof of income, basic expenses, proof of need, and proof
that there are no local county/state/federal programs to help with
that need or with anything else that could free up funds to meet that
need.  If there are programs available but you do not qualify you
would need proof of ineligibility.  You will need to supply a
photocopy of your legal identification.  All documentation must be
original and must be mailed.  If you wish the return of your documents
you must also provide photocopies and a self addressed stamped
envelope.  Emailed documents are not longer accepted.
