Biography
Czech Cottage History

The Czech Cottage has been in operation since 1975 in the Czech Village in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We're a relatively small shop featuring a very wide range of glassware, crystal, dinnerware, Royal Dux figurines and our specialty, Czech Garnet Jewelry, also known as Bohemian Garnet Jewelry.

For almost 25 years we have specialized in products of Czechoslovakia, [ now the Czech and Slovak Republics ] . We have everything from very inexpensive bowls, vases and bells to some of the most exotic decorative and collector items you'll find anywhere.
My Purpose
SAVE CZECH VILLAGE!

Cedar Rapids - Czech Village History

Cedar Rapids is a city that is home to thousands of Czech, Moravian and Slovak immigrants and their decendants since the turn of the Century. Many more Czechs homesteaded and settled the farms and small towns surrounding Cedar Rapids. The Czech Village is a restored section of what was the shopping district for many of those immigrants.

Up until WWII, Czech was the preferred language in the businesses that lined this section of Sixteenth Avenue. The Czech Village is still home to Sykora Bakery & Polehna Meat Market both date back to the 1920's, the Saddle and Leather Shop has only been here since the 1940's. Zindricks Czech Restaurant, Czech Feather and Down Co. and an assortment of antique shops and pubs round out the collection.

One of our proudest jewels is the National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library. In October of 1996, we hosted President Clinton, Czech President Havel and Slovak President Kovac for the dedication of this landmark facility.

I am a Cedar Rapidian who also lost to this devestating flood. I
enjoyed walking to Czech Village and seeing all the wonderful shops.
The bakery which was in the process of remodeling at the time of the
flood. Everytime family came to visit we would take them to the Czech
Cottage. This little store was beautiful. My grandparents were here in
2001 for my wedding and bought us wonderful gifts from this shop as
wedding gifts. I have lost them to the flood as well and can't wait to
see is wonderful part of the City of Cedar Rapids history reopen
bigger and better.

God Bless evereyone for the donations.
