Rayhawk Family Our family is looking for help to obtain land in SC to build a self sustaining homestead.
Location: South Carolina
Country: United States

Biography
In the year 2000 the Raymond-Hawkinson family was established. We bound our relationship with the purchase of land and a home. In 2003 we sacrificed what we had to try to save the lives of our beloved pets who were cruelly poisoned in their own yard by illegal area hunters. We lost our car which resulted in the loss of a job, then electricity/water and eventually our home and land.

We do not regret our decision to try to save the lives of our pets.

We discovered what our family truly wanted when we had to move out of our new house and live on the 2 acres of land we had. We learned how to build tipi's, we learned how to cook over open fire, how to use dehydrated foods, rely on the sun to warm our tipi and to heat water for bathing. We had to lug our own water so we also learned a lot about water conversation and recycling. We had no septic system to use, we had to learn safe methods of waste treatment. Had the house and land not been tied up in the same mortgage we could have let the house go without batting an eye. We had found something far more stable...but the land went with the house.

That experience while so many see it as heartbreaking really wasn't. We found that we had more when we had less. Now that we have modern housing that must be powered up and hooked up to water/sewer and we rely on grocery stores and the gas to get there...we are paying far more and have far less than what we had while relying on the earth.

Our family goal is to make our income count. If we could only get a piece of land and build unconventional shelters, grow our own much healthier food and use what nature offers to us we could be doing better in life.

We wish to build our shelter to compliment the abilities of our disabled family members and not be forced into paying expensive rents for adapted rentals or have to live with my mom the rest of my days which would include paying to have her house adapted.

If you can help us get started...we can do the rest. All we need is a piece of land in an unrestricted area.

Rayhawk Family's Request

Land for a self-sustaining homestead and animal sanctuary for disabled animals.
No ImagesNo ImagesNo Images
Description: Our income is not expected to raise very much because there is only one able bodied person able to work. Housing, utility, food and transportation costs will continue to rise. Our family would like to depend less upon modern housing which requires more electricity and water. We could do this by using alternative shelters, power and sanitation sources and could benefit by growing food which we regularly use such as poultry and vegetables. If we could only get a piece of land we could recycle cargo vehicles to use while building alternative structures. These would later be used as part of the whole homestead. This type of living cannot be done without the purchase of unrestricted land. Once we have land we can and wish to do the rest ourselves. Our current documents show proof that I am disabled and on SSI, I provided proof of the shelter and power costs we now pay.
Category: Environment , Green Development
Why? The potential long term impact..
If we could reduce the cost of living with alternatives shelter, utility and food. The income coming in will be far more beneficial to our family. We don't need more income, we need to make the income count.
Progress:
$210.00 (2%)
Still needed: $9790

Hello friends. I miss the journal. I uploaded documents showing the history our shelter and electric costs. After looking that them I found that if could have built our own house in my mom's back yard (eliminating house costs) and reduced our power consumption by building an energy efficient round house structure we could have had our land already. Our house costs and electric costs alone total up the money that could have bought a parcel of land therefore eliminating housing costs. If we owned our own land and recycled cargo vehicles while building structures we would be saving over $6000 a year which could be used to grow better quality food, provide educational and recreational advantages for our disabled adult son, provide us with decent and reliable transportation and much more.

Tammy Lynne, start saving all your plastic and glass bottles/jars with the caps, aluminum cans, food cans, cat food cans, coffee cans...basically any thing that can stand on it's own and can hold dirt or water. Save'em up, you use these as part of the building plan. If you have an area you can work in maybe you can plan to build a kids club house or a small storage unit to practice the layering. Once you have the structure you can decide what kind of roof you will use. For larger structures you need to start saving old tires for the foundation.

Thanks for the good luck wish! This is the very first time that I have not been able to get tires locally. Wel, they do have 2 places nearby. But the tires they sell are junk. And with traveling so much for appointments I need something that won't strand me on the side of the interstate! LOL!
Thanks hon!
God bless!

Dear Rayhawk Family,

Thank you so much for your kind greetings. I am a single mum, and I have two children. I appreciate your having more when you have 'less' because this has also been my experience. I pray that you are successful in your project.

If you ever get a chance...you gotta watch this video. It's often free on cable networks that have free on demand movies. Youtube has lots of footage from the video. I saw it and if you like the Earthship style house it's a must see!
