About this Project
UPDATE 2/9/12 - We cannot thank our generous friends and supporters enough for their help so far, but we have hit yet another unexpected brick wall, and this one very well might be the end of the road for us. The small business we are trying to get off the ground is dependent upon us having our own transportation. Due to some recent vandalism, we are once again stranded, having resurrected the car once. With that loss of income, we haven't been able to pay this month's rent, and have yet again been served with notice of an impending eviction, unless we can make up the shortfall very, very quickly, as our landlord is out of patience. I have sold all the family heirlooms I had left. All that's left are my instruments, without which I will not be able to be a musician anymore. The frosting on the cake is that Percy, one of our beloved cats, is now in desperate need of vet attention for a urinary problem that has reared its ugly head AGAIN. Up to this point, we have always been able to take him to the vet immediately, but right now, we can barely afford food. I'm doing all I know how to do to limp him along, but he really needs the help of the doctor I wish I could be for him.
Ironically, for the first time in a very long time, Sandy is receiving very promising offers of work, but they will not start for another few months or more, and by then it will be too late. Musical gigs and teaching are also on the horizon for me for the first time in ages. Added to our small business (if we can keep it going), this will put us on our feet again. But as things stand right now, once again, we won't even have the car to live in! With the prospect of upcoming work, we are finally in sight of the finish line, but in very real danger of going down for the count before we get there. Things are worse than they have ever been. Any help is appreciated more than you can imagine, and rest assured, our other kitties are working hard signing the "thank you" cards. Thank you from the bottom of all our hearts.
=======================================================================
Many of our friends know us online as "doc strangelove" and "peacekitten, " but our real names are Debra and Sandy. Like many people, we've been struggling but somehow managing to stay afloat. Now, unfortunately, we have lost that fight, and are at the end of our rope in every way.
Not very long ago, we became the victim of identity theft. Thieves took THOUSANDS of dollars from us electronically, and while the money stolen from the checking account was, and will be in future, mostly recovered (thanks to a MONUMENTAL battle with the bank), we were not so lucky with the other accounts. They are all gone, cannot be recovered, and represented a lifetime of savings. Savings, pensions, just evaporated, never to be seen again.
All during this disaster, our usual lines of work in music and film evaporated as well. It's the longest dry spell either of us have ever had in our working lives. Many jobs have been promised, only to be taken away at the last minute or pushed back indefinitely while the "suits" mull over the economics of the jobs in question. We really feel like Charlie Brown when Lucy pulls the football away!
Just to add insult to injury, one of our clients stiffed us for a substantial amount owed us for a completed film project. We were counting on this money earned to tide us over for a good long while, because it was all we had left. Now the matter is in the hands of the California court system, and it's anyone's guess as to IF or when we'll see even a small part of it.
We are now absolutely flat, stony broke. We are behind on the rent, about to be evicted. It's only the incredible generosity of family and friends that has prevented this from happening up to this point. Our telephone has been shut off for weeks now, and we will lose our phone number in the next week. We are about to lose our electricity and internet, upon which we have been relying to look for work. We can't pay for vital prescription medications, and we have no health insurance. Our car is in the shop with an unexpectedly huge bill we cannot pay, and as Sandy half-jokingly says, we can't even get it back to live in it. To get back on our feet, we are trying to create our own jobs by starting up a very modest business venture, but it is dependent upon having a car, which we can't get out of the shop without help.
We just need some help to get over this hump, so we can recover from everything that's been thrown at us lately. Once we do, it will be a great honor to pay this forward and help another. It's beyond mortifying that we are literally staring at life on the streets with our beloved pets, especially when we have always been the ones other people looked to for help, which we were always pleased to give.
We're at our wits' end, and are more grateful than we can express in words for any help we are fortunate enough to receive.
