Biography
We are a family of 4 living in a rural town in South Carolina. My oldest son and I are disabled and my youngest son has some developmental challenges. My life partner is healthy and she works at our local gas station where she has been ever since we lost our home in late 2003. We do our best to overcome challenges and do what we can on our own using as little government or public aid as possible.

Our family has enough income to cover our basic needs but there is rarely any money left to use or save for auto, home or property repair and upkeep. In my county if you don't mow your lawn you are fined, if your car breaks down and you can't fix it in 30 days you are fined for a disabled vehicle. If you can't afford to insure and register your vehicle on time you are fined for that. If your neighbors find your yard to be an "eyesore" you can be ordered to repair any home or fence damage or fined. It is illegal to collect used building supplies and store items to scrap and use. This is collecting "junk". We use this junk to tackle home repair jobs as we cannot afford to buy lumber, sheet metal, hardware, etc. We recycle the discards of others and reuse it for our projects.

We have consistently spent most of our spare income in satisfying the neighbors or battling fines and fees for disabled vehicles. Every official that has come here has suggested we erect a legal privacy fence. They are aware we are low income and can't keep up on the repairs, can't repair cars as they break down and we try to adapt things for disability but we can only do that by collecting discarded lumber and supplies and storing it in our yard until we have enough to tackle a project.

We have been ordered to remove 3 disabled vehicles because we couldn't get them repaired in time. One was a van we bought, the engine blew the day after we bought it. We were letting it sit till next income tax refund so we could put an engine in. We were ordered to remove this van meaning we simply burned up $1,500, it never saw the road. We were ordered to remove a blazer we planned to use as a parts car causing us to lose $1000. Finally we were told to remove our volvo which needed fuel system repair and was waiting for an income tax refund. We can only takle one project a year because we have to wait till tax refund time.

Many times we have had to pay someone to truck all our accumulated lumber to the dump to avoid paying a fine because another neighbor complained. There is no way possible for us to save funds to do our repairs, we must collect the discarded building supplies of others...to escape fines for collecting building supplies, having unmowed grass and brush (we can't afford to buy a new lawnmower and a gas weed eater) and having house repairs that need tending...we must erect a privacy fence.

We would also like to stop losing vehicles just because we have to wait till tax refund time to repair them.

Some things need new building supplies such as the sub flooring and ceiling repairs we need help with those building supplies but much could be done with salvage as long as we have privacy fencing and can legally collect it.

Opening the whole yard and fencing it in will also give me wheelchair accessible places. I am stuck between my bedroom, my ramp and another building which I use for my office. I can't get out into the yard because we can't build wheelchair walks which would be wooden sidewalks about 4 feet wide allowing access to the yard. I don't have an all terrain wheelchair and need these wheelchair sidewalks. These sidewalks would cause complaints and we would have to remove them. This is why I don't have a wheelchair ramp at my entry door in front of the house, it would be built with discarded materials and would not be in compliance with nusciance ordinances unless I was behind a privacy fence.

This is to show I was prescribed a new set of leg braces. I never got them though because again what was recommended did not match what was allowed and it was of no use to make taxpayers pay for something that wouldn't help.
My personal thank you to MicroGiving for helping me to get my new scooter.

Great Start to the New Year

Posted on Sat 9 Jan, 07:19 am

Our New Year started out in a positive direction. New Years day which is also Amy's Birthday found us enjoying a great family holiday meal and celebration. We were surprised that there were gifts involved! We expected a very small holiday but in fact Me, Amy and the boys were totally spoiled.
Josh and Amy went up earlier in the day to begin cooking. This was the first holiday dinner that either of them has ever cooked. Josh was in control of the ham and turkey, Amy was in control of vegetables and my mom was in control of desserts. Carrie always has control of the deviled eggs because nobody can make that as good as she can.
Amy spent the fall knitting socks for both my Mom and Carrie and she also made a magic ball of yarn for my mom. My mom also loves to knit and crochet. This ball of yarn includes little gifts within that my mom will find as she creates her next project using the yarn. We managed to find a coffee maker for Josh and bought him a pound of coffee and once we f  >>>

Becky Raymond (Rayhawk)'s Request
Basic Needs
Improve quality of life
Who I am:
We are Amy and Becky. We raised two disabled sons into adulthood and they both still live with us as they are unable to live independently. Our oldest is 100% disabled with Neurological, Cardiological, Psychological, and Developmental disorders. Our youngest was born with Fragile X Syndrome which is hard to explain, you can learn more at fraxa.org. Becky is physically challenged with a disorder known as early onset osteoarthritis with joint instability and a proprioceptive disorder. Amy is a healthy Navy Veteran who works as a cashier in our local hometown gas station.

What I need and what brought me to MicroGiving:
We are need of building supplies to finish up the last of the work on our floors that were damaged when we had multiple water pipes burst only to find out we did not have a shut off valve under our mobile home. Many things have been repaired since then but we still have a few things left to finish. We also need to build a privacy fence. My About Me Section can explain a bit more about the fencing needs.

My circumstance and my need for help:
We are able to support ourselves. We live very basic and are satisfied with that. Our shelter costs are not terribly high, we are good about keeping power consumption to a minimum, we use space heaters in rooms and only when they are occupied and we certainly reduce, reuse and recycle everything we can before buying something. We just can't handle big things like property care which requires a ride on lawn mower that we can't afford, vehicle repairs and upkeep or home repairs and adaptive renovation.

Any Supports other than Microgiving:
We typically rely on income tax refunds to tackle car repairs and at least one home repair project a year. We just learned that the Making Work Pay program resulted in only $64 dollars being taken out in federal taxes which means we will not see the $2000 we usually see in a combo of federal and state refund. We have no funds this income tax to do the electrical repairs needed on the truck. We now have to replace alternators every few months and we have no brake lights because of the bad electrical system plus we need 4 new tire, right now 3 are running on fix-a-flat. We will not be able tackle a singe home repair project this year so I will need to raise my request amount since one of the projects we planned to care for on our own is now not possible and we will need help.

My Comments

I have considered doing a new video, but the VA now has me in a wrist
brace, for several more weeks (hopefully then I can talk them out of
it). the problem is tendon damage at the wrist and thumb, and it never
healed, and now three years later they say, wear a brace to see if it
gets better (no likely).

My problem is I'm now homeless, and I'm out of money to pay the
storeage fees for everything I own in storeage, so I gave up on the
finger prosthetics (my hand don't work as well as it used to), and
just focus on my survival over the next couple weeks.

Honestly... I don't expect to make it, and this place was my last
hope, and not so much as a dollar donation, so, my "hope"
went out the door as soon as I got the news today that I have 30 days
to survive, and it's down hill FAST from there. I need to cacel my
car insurance next month as well.. I just don't have the money to pay
it, or for the gas to drive to the store to get food (my food stamps
expire next month.. oh joy..)

Things are not looking good :(

Hi Becky,
I just uploaded my information. But I'm not sure if it's gone through
or not. Can you check that for me.?
JensDad Feb 03, 2010 01:35:54
Thanks! Jen loves Photography and is trying to learn it on her own. We
simply can not afford to pay for any real lessons, and until she gets
through Chemo there is no way she can attend college. She is out of
luck equipment-wise as well...I dropped her only lens a few months
ago.

We will likely lose the domain next week...but I will work something
out. She has talent and it needs to be fed.

Reading about your family reminds me of just how we can adapt, as
parents, to anything thrown at us. To many they see it as some sad
story, to us its just life.

I will be praying for you and your family. Hopefully, someday I will
be in a position to help as you have helped me since I found this
site.

because we only have a small monitor heater and we are freezing. I
already submitted the request. Any advise?

Thank you for the reply and advice.

Thanks Becky. I didn't realize I needed a letter from a third part...
working on it now!

I'm extremely Google-able, if that makes any difference. I'm the only
person on the planet with my name, which makes it easy to find and
verify that I am me :)

Asking for a verification letter from someone is rather awkward for
me. I hope I can get one.
